Training is a key tool in our efforts to unify science, service and policy. Utilizing several methods, IRETA provides two different types of training programs. The first is focused specifically on substance abuse training for addictions professionals who are in direct prevention, intervention or treatment roles in the provider community. The second is interdisciplinary training targeted at a broad range of professionals in the addictions field or in program and policy development.

All training programs are designed to provide the most comprehensive and current information available, with the underlying premise that addiction is a chronic illness and recovery is the final, achievable goal. In our effort to support the addictions workforce, IRETA also works with various state, academic and professional organizations to obtain continuing education accreditation for all practicing professionals, when possible.

Conference

In addition to our other training programs, IRETA will regularly sponsor educational conferences which are designed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of one or two topics from a number of multidisciplinary perspectives. Conferences will be comprised of recognized experts in research, practice and policy coming together to address a topic from various perspectives, but working toward a common goal - the continued improvement of services to individuals with addictions.

NeATTC LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE FOR NY AND PA
August 25-29, 2008
Six Month Program
Price: $1,000

A Leadership Development Opportunity for Addiction Professionals

Many national and regional workforce surveys indicate that the addiction field is undergoing a leadership crisis as many agency directors/managers are approaching retirement age within the next decade, and considerable turnover is occurring at high levels of treatment organizations. The Northeast Addiction Technology Transfer Center (NeATTC), in partnership with SAMHSA’s Partners for Recovery, has stepped forward to provide one of the few educational opportunities to groom successors for leadership positions in addiction service organizations. Now in its fourth year, this professional development opportunity is available to addiction professionals in New York and Pennsylvania (NeATTC Region).

WHAT WILL THIS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE OFFER?
The NeATTC Leadership Institute provides a unique opportunity for emerging leaders within the addiction treatment field. It offers a combination of training seminars, distance learning, mentoring, and experiential learning within a six-month timeframe beginning with a five-day Immersion Training in August, 2008.

The primary goal of the NeATTC Leadership Institute is to cultivate new leaders through the enhancement of knowledge and development of competencies among new and emerging leaders. The Institute incorporates a four-phase design that will lay a foundation in developing leadership, and management skills:

PHASE I – ASSESSMENT The Leadership Institute begins with an in-depth online assessment of leadership and management interests, values and skills. Skills of participants are thoroughly analyzed through a 360-degree assessment completed by supervisors, peers and subordinates.

PHASE II - TRAINING EXPERIENCES The second phase of the Institute consists of a five-day Immersion Training and ongoing continuing education. The Immersion Training is provided by the Graduate School of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This intensive process is designed to establish a conceptual framework for the completion of the six-month Institute, including a comprehensive analysis of the online assessments. At the conclusion of the five-day training, each trainee is expected to create an Individual Leadership Development Plan (ILDP), based on his/her assessment. This plan consists of a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education and a Leadership Development Project which is designed with the guidance of a mentor.

PHASE III - EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING This phase of the Institute moves the trainee from the “classroom” to actual work settings typically the organization which they are employed with the guidance of a mentor. During this phase, the trainee will implement his/her Leadership Development Project and complete relevant continuing education projects. This phase will also include facilitated online discussions of relevant leadership topics in which all Institute trainees participate.

PHASE IV - RECOGNITION The Leadership Institute culminates in a special “graduation” ceremony where trainees will give presentations on their projects and describe how the projects related to their ILDPs.

TIP 42 Training of Trainers Call for Trainers - Western and Central Regions
May 6 and 7, 2008
Location: Altoona

Description: The Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Co-Occurring Disorders Training of Trainers (TOT) is based upon Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP 42), Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Co-Occurring Disorders, provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This Training of Trainers will assist in transferring evidence-based knowledge on the treatment of co-occurring disorders to frontline clinicians across the state.

Training Goal: The state will have a cadre of trained professionals (educators, clinicians, other professionals) that can “transfer/train” the larger workforce across the state; thus, alleviating the barrier of access to co-occurring training resources.

Location: The two day training will be held at the Ramada Conference Center in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Date: Tuesday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Audience: Twenty-five selected professionals with previous training experience as well as, expertise in mental health or substance use, or co-occurring services will be trained.

Requirements: All trainers will be required to provide at a minimum, 4 co-occurring trainings per year, locally upon completion of this curriculum.
