RESEARCH COURSE

The PA PIC has contracted Dr. Nancy Smythe from the New York University at Buffalo to prepare a Research Methodology Course. The course will be a tool for educating providers on research methods and methodology. The course describes in a sensitive and user-friendly manner basic research methodology, how to critically review research articles so that appropriate application of results to practice can occur, ethical considerations for conducting research in a clinical setting, and what is entailed in being a research collaborator. The application of the research course will hopefully result in an attenuation of the cultural dissonance that sometimes exists between substance abuse treatment providers and researchers. It is also hoped that the course will result in greater application of research to practice, which would translate, to an improved treatment system.

For more information about the Research Course, please contact Dr. Janice Pringle at pringlej@ireta.org or 412-258-8565.
